Mark Schalken (1967) is a visual artist and graphic designer. He studied design in Eindhoven and Breda and Cultural Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He has taught theory and history of graphic design at St. Joost Art Academy in Breda. He lives in Amsterdam  with his husband, singer-translator Ron Mesland.



Combining his expertise, he initiates projects on the crossroads of design, illustration and activism, e.g.: ‘The Meat Free City’, a graphic novel with 17 artists about animal rights.

In his art practice he combines drawing, photography and spatial work. He examines the relations between the individual and his/her environment (physical/ social/ political) and between body and mind.

In 2014 he published Polder Body, a photo book about the area were he grew up. ‘A beautiful and ambitious book’, according to Colin Pantall. More (in Dutch) >

In 2017 he constructed the Amsterdam air house (’Amsterdams Luchthuis’), an intimate place for meditation or performance. Made from local wood and inspired by the Tibetan Hava KhanaMore (in Dutch) >

With Albert Hennipman he founded studio de Ruimte Ontwerpers. From 1998 till 2021 they specialized in communication design with a focus on society, culture and education. In 2018 they founded Het Huis van Betekenis (‘House of meaning/drawing): a workplace and podium for illustrators and a platform for drawing culture.
